THE PRINT

In the late 1940s, Henri Matisse turned almost exclusively to cut paper as his primary medium, and scissors as his chief implement, introducing a radically new operation that came to be called a cut-out. Matisse would cut painted sheets into forms of varying shapes and sizes—from the vegetal to the abstract - which he then arranged into lively compositions, striking for their play with color and contrast, their exploitation of decorative strategies, and their economy of means. Initially, these compositions were of modest size but, over time, their scale grew along with Matisse’s ambitions for them, expanding into mural or room-size works. A brilliant final chapter in Matisse’s long career, the cut-outs reflect both a renewed commitment to form and color and an inventiveness directed to the status of the work of art, whether as a unique object, environment, ornament, or a hybrid of all of these. This premium quality giclee art print reproduction of the original advertising poster for Matisse's exhibition at the Galerie Berggruen & Cie has been produced on luxurious 100% cotton rag textured art paper using archival quality inks resulting in a superior print suitable for museum or gallery display. This stylish art print will make a stunning addition to your home decor. Timeless and elegant.

THE ARTIST

The French painter Henri Matisse was one of the great initiators of the modern art movement, which uses the combination of bold primary colours and free, simple forms. He was also the most outstanding personality of the first revolution in twentieth century art—Fauvism (style of art that uses colour and sometimes distorted forms to convey its message).

FRAMING

Skip the trip to the framer and save yourself time and money. We offer a bespoke custom framing service that is far more affordable than using your local high street framer and light-years ahead in quality than the ready-made frames you will find in homeware stores. Please note that our framing service is currently only available to customers based in New Zealand and Australia. We will deliver your beautiful custom framed artwork to your door within 7 working days if you reside in New Zealand or 15 working days if you reside in Australia. Matisse Papiers Decoupes works equally well with all three of our frame styles. Our black frame is the most popular option.
